WELCOME TO PROJECT SYCAMORE

The purpose of Project Sycamore is to provide a source of information, a means of communication, and a collective voice to Notre Dame alumni and others in the Notre Dame family who are concerned about preserving the Catholic identity of the University.

A Catholic University, as Catholic, informs and carries out its research, teaching, and all other activities with Catholic ideals, principles, and attitudes.
Pope John Paul II
Ex Corde Ecclesiae

The collision between Catholic ideals, principles, and attitudes and The Vagina Monologues (see sidebar) raises the question, not what harm the play will cause at Notre Dame, but what at Notre Dame has caused the play. The successful insistence of elements of the faculty that Father Jenkins sanction the play, coupled with the dramatic shrinking of Catholic faculty representation (see graph), point to the answer: the mounting secularization of the University. But many of the school's Catholic underpinnings remain, and Father Jenkins has announced his intention to confront squarely the faculty composition problem.

The time is opportune for alumni and others of the Notre Dame family to express both their concern and their support.

Catholic Faculty Decline
Trend in ND Faculty

"The combination of impending faculty retirements and predominant recent hiring trends...threatens Notre Dame's capacity to realize its mission."
